The police in Guyana are hunting for a United States citizen who allegedly killed his Canje Canefield reputed wife before fleeing the scene Tuesday night.
Dead: Bibi Deen
Dead is Bibi Shameana Deen, called Sharmela, of Lot 1071 New Area Canefield Settlement, East Canje, Region Six. The body is awaiting a post-mortem at the New Amsterdam Hospital in Berbice.
When this publication visited the home of the deceased, the property was tightly locked and a crowd of neighbours, friends, and relatives stood consoling the youngest brother of the deceased, Mohamed Khairoodin.
Composing himself, the grieving brother explained that around 23: 00h on Tuesday, he was aroused from sleep by a phone call from a relative residing in Reliance who informed him of the sad incident. Khairoodin said he then dialed his sister’s house number and spoke to his nephew, Ravendra, 13.
“I call and Rishie answer the phone, and he said ‘who is this? ‘Me said ‘Uncle Arif’… me said ‘wha happen, babe’… he said ‘come now Uncle Arif, daddy jook up mommy and mommy lie down with sheer blood, like she dead’… me ask where he father? He said his father get away.”
On arrival at the house, Khairoodin said the ambulance was already there and his sister was wrapped in a bed sheet. He said that the incident occurred in the lower flat of the concrete property where the couple shared a bedroom.
The woman was reportedly drenched in blood. He said that after a closer examination at the mortuary, three wounds were observed: on the forehead, left breast area and right rib cage respectively.
Khairoodin said after questioning his nephew, he learnt that Persaud had returned home and appeared to have had some liquor in his system. The boy said he left his parents conversing downstairs, went upstairs to his bedroom and fell asleep. Khairoodin said his brother-in-law Ramdani Persaud called Prakash, 46, who married his eldest sister Bibi in 1985, has not been seen since.
The deceased operated a grocery shop in the lower flat of the property and the accused lived and worked in the U.S. but came back to Guyana in January 2012 to visit.
At the time of the incident, the couple’s eldest son Dorendra, 16, was at an aunt in Reliance.
Neighbours told this publication that cries for help from the deceased were heard, but when they eventually realised what happened, they found her lying uncovered near to a bed face down. There was blood on the bed and a mosquito net was dropped.
There were also reports of three gunshot-like sounds going off at the deceased’s house. This publication understands that the man was charged for assaulting the deceased in January, and was placed on one year’s bond by Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo.
